Materials

When choosing a material for your job you should take into consideration not only the style you are after, but the physical location of the finished product.  In harsh environments within 2km of the ocean, rivers or bore watered areas, stainless steel or aluminium is recommended.

Aluminium

Aluminium is the material of choice for an array of applications.  Its strength to weight ratio allows products to be stronger and lighter.  It is one of the lightest available commercial metals with a density of approximately one third that of steel, making it a great choice for large heavy gates.

Aluminium also has excellent resistance to corrosion due to the thin layer of aluminium oxide that forms on the surface of aluminium when it is exposed to air.  In many applications it can be left in the mill finished condition.

Steel

Steel will provide greater strength than aluminium for comparable thicknesses has a greater product range so will be used when aluminium is not suitable or available.

Steel is used in all wrought iron products due to the huge range of available wrought iron components.
In order to prevent corrosion it must be hot dip galvanized and/or powder coated.

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel is available in different grades and finishes and should be selected for appearance, use and location of the finished product.

Grade '304' is a general purpose stainless and is the most common grade of stainless produced. It  offers good corrosion resistance.  304 stainless steel is best suited for indoor use and is inadequate for many marine applications.

Grade '316' offers the best corrosion resistance among standard stainless steel and is often refered to as "marine grade". Grade 316 is most suited to outdoor and marine applications.

There are several finishes of stainless available.  Some of the most common finishes are:

No. 4: Brushed Finish.  Also refered to as Satin. Brushed stainless has a slight directional grain running though it. Common places brushed stainless can be seen are on house hold applicances such as fridges.

No. 8: Mirror Finish.  Highly polished to have a mirror shine. Common places this can be seen are on handrails around shopping centres.

Corten Steel

CORTEN is a weather-resistant steel that protects itself via a unique pre-weathering process.  This application allows the outside layer to naturally rust, and in turn seals and protects the steel within.

It provides a rustic antique appearance and eliminates the need for painting surfaces.
